According to my training plan I am to run 40 entire miles this week. I don’t think it will happen. My foot has been giving me fits in all new locations. I’m supposed to run 5, 10, 5 and 20 this week. I will probably skip one of the 5 mile runs..or maybe both… and I am OK with that.
I’ve talked to a few friends who have all run marathons – and they all say the same thing; the long run this week is important- the other runs not so much. I’ve beat my body up enough over the last few weeks, if I skip one or two of the other runs I should be just fine. One runner said I could actually get a bit stronger with rest between runs. Interesting thought.
The crazy part? I’m actually excited to run 20 MILES. Yes, I’ve lost my damn mind. I don’t know what excites me more; the idea that I will be running the longest mileage I will run before my marathon OR the fact that after this long run my training will be all down hill. I am curious to see what my time will be after 20 miles. That will give me a good idea how I will finish on marathon day.
BUT I have also decided to make my marathon a social event. I want to invite my friends to flag me down at the water stops (every 2 miles) along the way. I’ll stop, give a sweaty hug, pose for a picture and continue on my way. Doing this will really mess with my time, but remember my goal, “finish” a marathon. I won’t qualify for Boston, nor do I want to. If you want to see the full course- you can check it out HERE.
I’m sure by next week I will have some kind update regarding the 20 mile run. I’m still debating whether I run my usual course or something new just to get a little variety. I am a creature of habit and really do enjoy my regular route, yet I think change might do a body good.
Wish me luck!
